Badu Island is a large granite island, with hilly timbered terrain, located 40 km north of Thursday Island in the Torres Strait. This was a major project to construct sewerage infrastructure for the island and collect raw sewerage from 612 residential and commercial properties. Before the installation of the new sewerage system, a septic system existed on the island.

Along with 9.6km of gravity sewer, 11.2km of rising main, and 3 concrete sewerage pump stations; the sewerage scheme also included a treatment plant with settling ponds and ocean outfall.
